The brand My Wacky Forest has been created to promote Professor Miyawaki’s work and highlight the huge environmental and social benefits it delivers.
Magic of micro forests
Microforests offer enhanced performance because of the planting philosophy. The native mix is planted to encourage natural competition and natural interaction which in turn causes significantly quicker growth rates and numerous, enhanced environmental benefits.
Microforests can absorb up to 30 times more carbon and are significantly more bio-diverse. With our model, outdoor learning spaces are created to ensure users appreciate all of the benefits that interacting with nature can bring.

mission
My Wacky Forest™ is inspired by the works of the famous Japanese botanist, Dr Akira Miyawaki, who pioneered the planting method called the Miyawaki Method.
Often referred to as Micro forests, the methodology is based on using native species, planted densely and thus mimicking the natural regeneration process. The trees grow up to 10 times quicker and produce much more biodiverse forests.
Given the climate challenges we face, we are hoping that Mushi and his friends will help to spread the knowledge and methodology of the wonderful world of Miyawaki, to ensure we harness the enhanced performance of these super forests.
Our mission is to make sure every child has the opportunity to plant their very own 'My Wacky Forest'.
about the author
Steve Warren-Brown has always had a deep connection to nature, spending much of his childhood immersed in the outdoors. After a successful career in landscaping, Steve felt a calling to make a bigger environmental impact.
Inspired by Professor Akira Miyawaki’s work on microforests, Steve created My Wacky Forest, a book series that uses storytelling to teach children about the environment. His first book, Super Mushi, introduces young readers to the magic of nature, rewilding, and the vital role they can play in protecting our planet.
Through his social enterprise, Societree, Steve is on a mission to inspire future generations to tackle the climate crisis
— one wacky forest at a time.
BOOKS
The Characters
Mushi
Mushi is wise and knowledgeable but often speaks to his friends about the challenges they all face in their forest. He is the hero, who keeps the forest clean and looks after all of his family of friends.
Oaky
Oaky is the wise one of the forest. Over 300 years old, he has seen the forest develop and flourish through all of the challenges nature throws at it.
Louse
Mushis work mate, always busy helping tidy up the forest with Mushi.
Woodsie and Podge
It’s all about eating for these lovable Pigeons. They are lifelong friends, are a little slow
and clumsy, and love a moan.
Sycamore
Large tree in stature, but coy. He has a huge family that tends to get everywhere, and this can annoy some of the other forest residents, except Poison Ivy, who loves his leaves.
Mrs. Hazel
She is very maternal and loves her hazelnuts who are mischievous and always busy. She also loves a regular trim!
Jay
Prefers to go about his business in the background. He loves acorns, and buries them everywhere, and then forgets where he put them!
Poison Ivy
Nobody likes Poison Ivy. He is sneaky and always looking to take over the forest. The villain, who Mushi always enjoys putting in his place.
Snail
Another great friend of Mushi, who isn’t very clever and is very slow. He does get into trouble occasionally.
Robin
Busy, Busy, Busy. Don’t get in his way, and don’t upset his friends as he is hugely protective.
Sloe Berry Babies
Bunch of youngsters, who just want to play. They always go to Mushi for help and love playing with the hazelnuts.
